Ugly Christmas sweater contest judging sheet and voting guide

Most ugly sweater contests end with a show of hands, and the loudest friend wins. Below is a score sheet you can print, the awards contests usually hand out, and a way to let the room vote from their phones.

Ugly sweater score sheet

Five criteria, 100 points. The weights are my suggestion, so change them to fit your party. Ugliness gets the most because it is the point of the contest. Creativity comes second so a clever sweater can beat one that is merely loud. Score only the sweater and leave out who is wearing it.

Craftsmanship and materials20Printed or bought as is, nothing added.Hand-sewn or glued additions, odd materials, details that took hours.

Rough guide for each row: under a third of the points is a clear weakness, around half is fine but forgettable, and the top fifth is for sweaters people photograph.

Categories and awards

The contests I looked at, from a community hall to a company party, hand out a similar set of awards. Pick three to five and put them in the invitation.

Ugliest sweater
The core award. Judge the clash: colors, patterns and add-ons that should not share a sweater.
Funniest
A pun, a gag, a sweater that gets a laugh without an explanation.
Most creative or best homemade
Handmade, restyled or built from odd materials. Give craftsmanship extra weight here.
Prettiest ugly
The sweater that is almost good-looking. A fun counterweight to the ugliest award.
Best group or couple
Two or more sweaters that work as one joke. Treat the group as one entry and cap the size, for example two to five people.
Best vintage
A real sweater from the eighties or nineties. Its owner gets credit for finding it.

Let each person win one category, so one sweater does not sweep the night. Set the rules before the party: nothing that mocks a group of people, lights and batteries must be safe to wear, and a sweater you can keep on indoors.

Judges or a room vote

  • Judge panel: three people with one printed sheet each, scores added up. Pick judges who are not entering, ideally ones with a good sense of humor. Good for the category awards.
  • Room vote: every guest rates the sweaters. More people shape the result, which suits an office party. Good for a People's Choice prize.
  • Both: a panel picks the categories and the room picks one extra prize.

Run the vote on phones

  1. As people arrive, give each sweater a number (a sticker on the sleeve works). Keep a list of who has which number. A group gets one number.
  2. Create the scorecard and list the sweaters by number. Voters see the numbers, so nobody votes for a friend by name.
  3. Print the table card with the QR code and put it where people gather, or paste the link into the party chat. Remote teams can share it on a video call.
  4. Guests rate each sweater from 1 to 5. They can skip sweaters they did not see.
  5. Close voting when you want to announce, and read the ranking from the results page. For a small panel, add up the paper sheets instead.

One scorecard ranks one award, up to 20 entries. For separate awards such as Ugliest and Funniest, make a scorecard for each, or run one scorecard for the room vote and let the panel pick the rest. Voting for friends is the weak spot of any room vote, so keep it to one prize.

Breaking a tie

The results page ranks by average rating and puts the sweater with more ratings first when averages match. Sweaters with the same average and the same number of ratings share a place. For a sheet-based tie, announce a rule before the vote: the tied sweaters are re-scored on ugliness only by the same judges, and the higher score wins. If it is still tied, the head judge decides.

Start an ugly sweater contest scorecard. The title is filled in; add the sweaters by number and share the link.
